On Saturday, August 9 1,768 riders came together on a beautiful 225 km ride though the majestic Canadian Rockies to raise an astounding $7.9 million benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Among them, five Tetranites who raised a whopping $15,011 beating their goal of $12,500! Many rode for the hope that research provides, other’s ride with a loved one in mind. “I rode to raise awareness to my family and friends that cancer is a battle we cannot ignore. There are a lot of people suffering and affected by this and I want to be a part of a charity event that will give hope and to support.” says Jupiter Gutierrez, Intermediate Electrical Designer.
“The atmosphere was amazing. There was a huge crowd of people for hours before it started. You could feel the adrenaline in the air. We were all pretty pumped up.” recalls Mark de Regt, Electrical Engineering Manager. Participants left Canada Olympic Park Saturday morning and made their way southwest towards Bragg Creek, through Priddis, south to Turner Valley, and east to Okotoks. On Sunday, they rode the same route home.
“Most of us didn’t have any mechanical problems; unfortunately, I had two flats on the same tire.” tells Akshay Jari, Junior Electrical Engineer. “I was about 80 km into the ride when I got my first flat; the rider behind me stopped and offered me his pump to use as I wasn’t carrying my own. Once that was fixed I kept going. Then, 15 minutes later, the same tire got flat. This time however, I didn’t have a spare tube with me so I was stuck. I waited for a sweep vehicle to drive by take me to the next pit stop where the bike mechanics fixed my flat, free of charge, and I was on my way. This experience seemed like it took forever but in hindsight, the 45 minutes I spent fixing these two flats was fast. I would’ve been a sitting duck if I didn’t get the help from the other riders and mechanics.” The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer attracted over 550 volunteers from Calgary and area.
“It is really nice to be a part of Tetranex, we maybe a small company but we are givers; we like to support charities like this. For management to support us on our fundraising and to provide cool, one-of-a-kind jerseys tells us a lot of how much Tetranex is a company of team players.” boasts Gutierrez.
“The fact that Tetranex generously donated $5,000 to the team as well as all the work to design and provide team jerseys really goes to show how Tetranex values teamwork and encourages its employees to gives back to its community. The support from Tetranex management is outstanding.” adds Jari.
“We have a great team, and participating in events such as these gives a great sense of pride to be a part of a company that endorses these types of things.” says de Regt.
“Tetranex is it’s people…and our people are great! There were five riders on the team this year, but we had many, many more team members that came in the form of crew support, donation contributors, cheerleaders and corporate supporters. We strive to be a company of unparalleled quality and teamwork and when these ideals extend into events like this one, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be a part of Team Tetranex!” agrees Chris Sibun, Electrical Design Manager.
